Sheffield Delegation to Iraq

In November 2000 Sheffield sent a delegation of 13 people to Iraq. Some stayed for 3 days while others stayed for 2 weeks. In coming weeks we will have reports and photos from the delegation. Right now there is just a newspaper article which appeared in the Sheffield Star in December and the objectives of the trip below.

Mission Statement:

Sheffield Campaign Against War in the Gulf, with support from the wider community, sent a delegation to Iraq with this mission:

  1. To protest against the British and US governments' policy of bombing and sanctions against Iraq. We understand these policies to be genocidal in their effects upon the Iraqi people, which include economic collapse, soaring child deaths and radiation poisoning;
  2. To meet Iraqi people in peace and in friendship; to build links of solidarity between Iraqis and people and organisations in the Sheffield community;
  3. To bring back to Sheffield an eye-witness report on the impact of British and US policy upon Iraqi society and Iraqi children in particular;
  4. To find a way through the sanctions to deliver essential health and education supplies.
